Costa Rica is still affordable for your retirement dreams. Property taxes, hired help, dining out, fruits and vegetables and above all the high quality healthcare are still much cheaper than in the United States.

In fact, Costa Rica's social indicators are the best in Latin America and approach levels prevailing in advanced economies in North America and Europe..

The IMF (International Monitary Fund) says "Costa Rica’s economic fundamentals are solid, reflecting years of generally prudent policies" and has given Costa Rica’s financial institutions and fiscal policies a passing grade, which is considered highly desirable in the resto of the worlds tough economic times.

Costa Rica has had a stable democracy since 1949 and a long tradition of ruling by consensus. It was not subject to the kind of political and civil unrest that has tragically set back progress in neighboring countries, nor was its progress impeded by these nearby conflicts.

Costa Rica's poverty has been reduced to below 20 percent
over the past 20 years.

Extreme poverty has been halved from its level in 1990.

Education levels are high and practically the entire population is literate - 95% literacy.

Health indicators are strong, with high life expectancy. There is wide access to quality health services and safe water.

Costa Rica - Economy & Democracy

Costa Rica has more American residents proportionately than any other country outside of the United States.

Most Baby Boomers who move to Costa Rica say their lifestyle is as good if not better than what they had back home in the United States and without question it is more affordable.

Costa Rica's overwhelming natural beauty, excellent low-cost health care system, year-round spring-like weather, friendly people, the oldest democracy in Latin America, a modern communications system, one of the hottest real estate markets in the world with a variety of housing options, excellent restaurants, the availability of U.S. products, all of the comforts of home at half of the cost and so much more - make Costa Rica tops on the list of retirement havens, especially in our recessional economy.

Bottom Line: Baby Boomers have found that Costa Rica's high standard of living offers a lower cost of living and with its foreigner friendly government, lack of political strife and serious violent crime, low cost of quality medical care and prescription drugs, a very stable real estate market along with the friendly Costa Rican people, great year-around tropical weather with its beautiful beaches and countryside to be a highly desirable formula for enjoying our retirement.
