NBC: Baby Boomers Retiring Overseas

One of the very hottest spots for American Baby Boomers to receive all of our retirement living desires is to retire in Costa Rica.

Baby Boomers have found out that Costa Rica has one of the highest standards of living in Latin America with a purchasing power that is much greater than in the United States or Canada. The country is truly a bargain compared to most places.

Housing in middle-class Costa Rican neighborhoods is substantially less than what it does in the United States. Hired help is a bargain with a full-time maid costing only a couple of hundred dollars per month. Utilities-telephone service, electricity, and water- cost about 30% of what they do in the United States.

Baby Boomers living In Costa Rica will enjoy a higher standard of living and get more for our money than we will in the United States, Canada and Europe. A couple can live well on $1200 a month, and live in luxury for $2000. Remember, two in Costa Rica, can often live as cheaply as one.

You never need to heat your home because of Costa Rica's warm climate. You need not cook with gas, since most stoves are electric. Food, continuing education, and entertainment (movies cost a little over $3.00) and both new and second-hand furniture are priced very low too.

Above all, healthcare in Costa Rica is very affordable.
In a recient United Nations study, Costa Rica's medical system, was first in Latin America and ranked near the United States and Canada, among the 20 best in the world. If you're thinking of third-world hospitals with poor hygiene and badly trained staff, think again. The University of Costa Rica has one of the most respected medical schools in all of Central America and the Caribbean, and many doctors do further study in Europe, Canada, or the United States.Confidence in the system is expressed by the number of people who come to Costa Rica just to have surgery, whether it's a triple bypass or a face-lift.

Bottom Line:
Baby Boomers are finding the Costa Rican high standard of living while offering a lower cost of living, its foreigner friendly government, its lack of political strife and serious violent crime, its low cost of quality medical care and prescription drugs, its stable real estate market along with the friendly Costa Rican people, its good year-around tropical weather with its beautiful beaches and countryside to be a highly desirable formula for enjoying our retirement.
